Members of Mérida’s International Womens Club, husbands and friends enjoyed overnight visits to Kiuic in February. Two separate groups caravanned to the reserve; the first spearheaded by Dorothy Andrews and her husband, John. Their night in the woods coincided with a record low temperature, which posed a lesson in how to keep warm in a hammock.
The second group was inspired by Jane Grimsrud and her husband, John. The Grimsruds bicycled the six kilometers to Kiuic from Yachachen, where they had enjoyed the overnight hospitality of a Mayan family. After leaving Kiuic, the Grimsruds bicycled 50 kilometers to the city of Tekax.
Both groups were led in tours guided by James Callaghan, reserve director. The tour included a walk in the woods and a talk on the biological and archaeological conservation and research taking place at Kiuic.
Another highlight for both groups was an informal presentation by researchers from the Center of Scientific Research in Mérida. They pointed out the importance of their research in the successional stages of the medium-high, semi-evergreen forest that populates the reserve.
On both occasions, food was prepared in the reserve kitchen by women staff members and served in the spacious dining room.
Donations to the association made by Mr. Bronwyn Scott and Ms. Charlotte Montagus were gratefully accepted.
