The Ecological Society of America held its first meeting outside the United States in Mérida in January of this year. The international conference included excursions to the Kaxil Kiuic Biocultural Reserve, the state reserve at San Juan Bautista Tabí and the Loltun caves as part of the program. This year’s theme was “Ecology in an Era of Globilization: Challenges and Opportunities for Environmental Scientists in the Americas.” The two-day trip to the sites outside of Mérida was participated in by 19 persons, principally researchers and post- graduate students from research centers and universities of the United States, Canada, Chile and Argentina. Dr. Juan Manuel Dupuy of the Center of Scientific Investigation of Yucatan (CICY in spanish) and one of Kiuic’s on-site researchers, represented Mexico on the tour.
