Breanau Group in Kiuic

Dr Ed Schrader, president of Breanau University, a new partner in our organization, promoted two international pilot study courses in Yucatan this past summer. One of the courses, in Community Health, led by Professors Becky McGonigal and Mary Shotwell led to a number of offsite experiences. Reserve director James Callaghan, personally oversaw the development of the course. Professor McGonigal wrote the following:

........................................................................................................................

I'm astonished that time is passing so quickly since our visit. I came back to a quick vacation with my husband and a summer teaching and research load. I still reflect almost daily on our experiences in Merida, Kiuic, Yaxhachen, Oxkutzcab and Ticul. I still can't believe all we accomplished in our short visit thanks to your arrangements and hard work. Everything we did and everyone we met added to our insight and knowledge. We are especially grateful for the clinic and hospital visits in Yaxhachen and Ticul. Through your wisdom and sensitivity, you truly helped us enter into the environment and the culture. I wish you could have heard the final student presentations; you would have been proud.

This trip truly exceeded anything that I expected and anything that I have experienced before with student field work. We were all changed by the experience and quite frankly, I did not think this would happen for me. I will have to say that our time with Doņa Rosa was very important for me. I felt such a connection with her. I would love to have an update on how she is doing and most especially your efforts to obtain a solar panel and pump for their well.

We are having a planning meeting in a couple of weeks to plan for the next class. We look forward to having a little more planning time for the next round, although I'm not sure how it could go much better. My warmest regards to your family and everyone at Kiuic.
